The Joys of Summer

Today I finished my sophomore year of college and I’m ready to start enjoying the summer. Oh wait, it’s only the beginning of May. Even though there’s over a month until summer solstice, we like to say that summer holiday starts in the beginning of May. Odd yes, but am I going to complain, no. So to start my “summer” off right, I partook in the great American pastime, baseball.

Baseball is one of my favorite parts about the summer. From the metal ping of a ball hitting a bat, to the seventh inning stretch, there are many things about a ball game that make summer feel like summer. Maybe part of it is that memory of the sandlot down the street and the warm summer night games that have been internalized in my head from some distant past. Or maybe I’ve just watch The Sandlot too many times. Either way, baseball has been one of those things that has meant “summer is here” from my childhood until now.

Ah, the joys of being a kid playing ball in the back yard.

But now that I’ve been to my first pro-game of the year, I feel like I’m ready to start doing the many other wonderful things of summer. Next up, a good day at the beach, filled with sailing, kayaking, surfing, and some fishing. The evening will then be spent in a hammock with a cold drink and the sound of the waves in the background. Ah, I wish that could be tomorrow’s agenda, but alas, it will be several weekends until I can make it down to the beach. But in the mean time, I’ll plan day 2 of “summer” to include a pitcher of sweet tea, a good book, a back porch, and no more studying.
